How to keep your face blemish-free all summer

I don't know about you, but I always thought pimples were a right of passage when I was a teenager, and not something that I would be dealing with in the my thirties. My dermatologist husband tells me I am not alone and the number of adult women with acne is at an all time high. Because even one pimple can ruin your day, here are some tips to keep your face clear all summer long.

One. Choose the right sunscreen

Proper sun protection is important all year round, but especially important in the summer time when the sun rays are at their strongest. Look for sunscreens that are labeled as non-comedogenic, which means that they have been shown not to clog your pores. The Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen is a personal favorite.

Two. It’s all the about the primer.

Primers help prep the skin for the rest of your skincare routine. When it comes to oily and acne prone skin, mattifying primers reduce shine, blur the pores, and create a clean canvas for your makeup. My personal favorite, no surprise, it’s the Jori Acne & Oil Control Primer. Maximum strength 2% salicylic acid treats and prevents breakouts by removing excess oil and exfoliating dead cells from the surface of the skin. Plus niacinamide and Vitamin C in the formula brighten the complexion and even skin tone. You can wear it on its own for a silky complexion, or under makeup to help it go on smoother.

Three. Avoid liquid make-up

We all need a little coverage sometimes, but liquid make ups can make you break out. Instead, mineral makeup or powder foundations are a better option because they won’t clog your pores. Plus, powders like Bare Minerals Mineral Foundation help reduce shine by absorbing oil.

Four. Get out of sweaty workout gear ASAP

Everybody loves to jog outside, but it’s important not to sit in your sweaty clothing, which can promote breakouts. Performance fabrics are a better option than cotton because they help wick away moisture from the skin. However, no matter what shirt you’re wearing, staying in a sweaty top traps dirt and oil against the skin and can make you break out.

Five. Salicylic acid is your best friend

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxyacid that is proven to treat and prevent breakouts. You can find it in cleansers or in product designed to be left on the skin. It helps dry out pimples and keeps your pores clear. The Kate Sommerville EradiKate Acne Treatment does the trick.

Six. Don’t over scrub

If a little is good, then a lot has to be better, right? Absolutely not. While scrubs and exfoliators can help brighten the complexion, it’s important not to irritate your skin. Rather than scrubs, I tend to use masks that contain ingredients like clay that absorb oil and calm the skin. The Fresh Umbrian Clay Pore Purifying Mask is a cult fave.

So there you have it, the derm recommend tips that I stick to during the summer to keep my skin clear. You can’t choose you skin, but you can choose your skincare. #DermWifeApproved
