My Favorite Rose Skincare For Valentine's Day

During February in New York City you can't walk a block without seeing endless bunches of roses at the corner bodega. The only thing better than a dozen long stems on my table for Valentine's Day is rose extracts in my skincare. Besides an amazing scent, rose extract actually has well proven benefits on the skin. Dr. Z tells me, "Rose oil is rich in antioxidants that protect the skin and have been shown to lighten dark spots and even your complexion." They also contain fatty acids to soften and hydrate the skin, and they have calming benefits to soothe inflamed skin.

There are many different types of roses and types of oils used in skincare.  Here's the breakdown:

1. Rose oil is an essential oil extract derived from the rose petals through distillation. This means that the petals are steamed and the oil is evaporated out. Pure rose oil needs to be diluted in a carrier oil because it would be too irritating otherwise.

2. Rose absolute oil is and extract removed from the petals of the flower using a chemical process rather than through distillation.

3. Rosehip oil is made by cold pressing oil from the rosehip (which is fruit which sits just below the flower).

4. Rosewater is basically a diluted mixture of the rose oil from rose petals in water.

And now a roundup of my favorite rose containing skincare products, perfect for Valentine's Day, and great to use all year round.

Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist ($26)
This mist acts like a toner, to balance the skin.  I love the scent, and it helps calm and soothe my skin.

Sisley black rose skin infusion cream ($195)
This mask is one of my all-time favorite night creams. The rich formula dries without leaving your face feeling greasy, and the rose extract helps even skin tone.

Lancôme Rose Jelly Overnight Mask ($35)
The texture of this mask is ultra light. Besides rose water, the mask is loaded with plumping hyaluronic acid, so your skin looks and feels more radiant when you wake up .

Herbal Dynamics Beauty Rose Water Calming Face Toner ($12)
The toner itself is an oh-so-cute pink color and is packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients like green tea, aloe, chamomile, and witch hazel along with rose water.  So helps reduce inflammation while balancing the skin's pH.

Because the benefits of rose extract on your skin last way longer than for just Valentine’s Day, these products are #TheDermWifeApproved
